Why it suits you: Blood-stasis types are prone to period pain, a dull complexion and easy bruising when blood is sluggish as liver qi rises around the Spring Equinox. Sweet, warm Chinese rose moves blood, regulates menstruation and eases the liver, while red dates nourish blood so it moves without depleting.
Method
Prep 3 min · Cook 15 min- 1Bring the red dates and water to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes.
- 2Turn off the heat, add the rose buds, cover and infuse for 5 minutes.
- 3Strain, sweeten to taste and drink warm.
Cautions
- Chinese rose moves blood: avoid it during pregnancy or with heavy periods.
Chef's tips
- Do not boil the flowers; infusing them off the heat keeps the fragrance.
The TCM view
Chinese rose is sweet and warm, moving blood, regulating menstruation and soothing liver qi. Red dates are sweet and warm and support qi and blood; brown sugar harmonises the middle. Together they move and nourish blood and ease the liver.
