Why it suits you: Qi Deficiency means sweating easily and tiring fast, and Major Heat burns through both qi and fluids. American ginseng restores qi and yin without overheating, while red dates and pumpkin gently build energy — an afternoon lift without coffee.

Method

Prep 10 min · Cook 20 min
  1. 1Tear the red dates open and put them in a vacuum flask with the ginseng slices. Pour in 800 ml boiling water, close and steep for 20 minutes.
  2. 2Cut the pumpkin into chunks, skin on. Steam over high heat for 12–15 minutes, or microwave on high for 4–5 minutes, until tender.
  3. 3Sip the tea with the pumpkin at 3–4 pm. Top the flask up with boiling water for a second steep, and chew the ginseng slices at the end.

Cautions

  • Pause the ginseng during a cold or fever. If you take blood pressure, diabetes or blood-thinning medicine, check with your doctor first.

Chef's tips

  • Buy pre-sliced American ginseng — herbal shops will slice it for you. 5–10 g a day is plenty.

The TCM view

American ginseng is sweet, slightly bitter and cool; it tonifies qi, nourishes yin and replenishes fluids. Red dates and pumpkin are sweet and warm and build qi, balancing the ginseng's coolness. Sweetness tonifies without heat — just right when summer heat has drained both qi and fluids.

The hottest time of year. Extreme heat consumes Qi and Yin. Focus on cooling fluids and easy-to-digest proteins. Stay indoors during peak heat hours and ensure adequate hydration with electrolyte-rich broths. Avoid heavy physical labor to prevent heat exhaustion.
