Why it suits you: Sensitive (allergic) types react easily and often have delicate digestion. Yam, lotus seeds and pumpkin are gentle, low-allergen spleen tonics, and blended into a cream they are easy to digest — protecting digestion and defensive qi as the season turns at Cold Dew.

Method

Prep 10 min · Cook 40 min
  1. 1The night before, soak the lotus seeds until soft and push out any green cores. Wearing gloves, peel and dice the yam.
  2. 2Put everything in a soy milk maker on the rice-cream setting, or in the rice cooker on the porridge setting with the timer on.
  3. 3If using the rice cooker, blend smooth with a stick blender in the morning and sweeten with a little rock sugar to taste.

Cautions

  • Constipated or bloated? Halve the lotus seeds.

Chef's tips

  • Lotus seed cores are bitter, so push them out with a toothpick after soaking.

The TCM view

Chinese yam is sweet and neutral and supports the spleen, lungs and kidneys; lotus seeds are sweet, astringent and neutral and steady digestion and calm the mind; pumpkin is sweet and warm and builds qi. Blended, these sweet foods are easy to absorb — nourishing without drying.
