Why it suits you: Yin Deficiency already brings a dry mouth and dry skin, and Cold Dew dryness makes it worse. Black sesame and soy milk nourish yin and moisten, and yam supports the spleen, lungs and kidneys — soothing the throat and bowels without adding heat.
Method
Prep 8 min · Cook 15 min- 1Wearing gloves, peel the yam and cut into finger-sized batons. Steam over high heat for 12–15 minutes until a chopstick slides in (or microwave on high for 5–6 minutes).
- 2Warm the soy milk in a pan over medium-low heat until small bubbles appear — do not let it boil hard — then turn off the heat and stir in the ground sesame.
- 3Let it cool slightly until just warm, then stir in the honey and pour into mugs.
- 4Sprinkle the yam with the sesame seeds and eat with the warm sesame soy milk.
Cautions
- If you have loose stools or diarrhoea, cut down on the sesame and soy milk.
Chef's tips
- No ground sesame? Grind toasted black sesame in a spice grinder; make a jarful and keep it in the fridge.
The TCM view
Black sesame is sweet and neutral; it nourishes the liver, kidneys and blood and moistens the intestines. Soy milk is sweet and neutral and moistens the lungs; Chinese yam is sweet and neutral and supports the spleen, lungs and kidneys; honey moistens the lungs and bowels. Sweet, neutral and moistening, it answers the way autumn dryness drains body fluids.
