Chinese yam, carrot & lean pork congee
Fresh yam and carrot cooked into a smooth, gently sweet pork congee — low-allergen and set on a timer the night before.

- Simmer
- Easy
Why it suits you: Sensitive types react easily and often have delicate digestion, so gentle, low-allergen food suits best. Yam supports the spleen and lungs, carrot the spleen and liver, and lean pork moistens. When dry Frost's Descent air sets off sniffles, this sweet congee protects the spleen and lungs.
Method
Prep 15 min · Cook 60 min- 1The night before, rinse the rice and put it in the rice cooker with the yam, carrot, red dates, ginger and water. Set the porridge timer.
- 2Mix the pork with a pinch of salt and the cornflour and keep it in the fridge overnight.
- 3In the morning, switch to cook (or bring the congee to the boil in a pot), drop in the pork in small pieces, stir to separate and cook for 5 minutes until done.
- 4Season with a little salt and serve.
Chef's tips
- Dried yam slices work instead of fresh — just soak them the night before.
The TCM view
Chinese yam is sweet and neutral, supporting the spleen, lungs, kidneys and defensive qi; carrot is sweet and neutral, strengthening digestion and nourishing the liver; lean pork is sweet, salty and neutral and moistens dryness; red dates warm the middle. Mild, sweet and simple — nourishing without drying.
