Why it suits you: Phlegm-damp types feel heavy and off their food at Minor Cold. Cabbage moves qi, grass carp supports the spleen and drains water, and plain congee does not sit heavily.

Method

Prep 10 min · Cook 35 min
  1. 1Boil the rice with the water and ginger, then simmer for 25 minutes.
  2. 2Shred the cabbage. Rub the fish with a pinch of salt and slice it.
  3. 3Add the cabbage and simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. 4Add the fish and cook until just done. Season and scatter with spring onion.

Cautions

  • Cook the fish through, and keep the congee lightly seasoned.

Chef's tips

  • Add the fish at the end so it stays silky.

The TCM view

Cabbage is sweet and neutral, easing the middle and moving qi; grass carp is sweet and neutral, strengthening the spleen and draining water; rice supports the spleen; a little ginger removes fishiness. It suits phlegm-damp types at Minor Cold.

Seasonal principle

One of the coldest periods. Focus on warming the Kidneys and strengthening the Spleen to maintain energy. Consume hearty, mixed-grain porridges (like Laba congee) to provide sustained warmth and nutrition. Avoid cold drinks and raw foods entirely during this deep freeze.
