Why it suits you: Damp heat starts to build at Grain Buds, and a heavy, greasy breakfast leaves you sluggish all day. Avocado and tomato are fresh rather than oily and wholemeal bread brings fibre, so a Balanced constitution stays alert without feeling weighed down.

Method

Prep 10 min · Cook 3 min
  1. 1Halve and stone the avocado, scoop out the flesh and crush it roughly with a fork with the lemon juice, salt and pepper.
  2. 2Toast the bread in a toaster or oven until crisp.
  3. 3Spread the avocado on the toast, top with the tomato, drizzle with a little olive oil and scatter with the sesame seeds.

Cautions

  • Avocado is calorie-dense, so half to one is plenty per meal; people with a latex allergy may also react to avocado.

Chef's tips

  • Choose an avocado with dark green skin that gives slightly when pressed; squeeze lemon over any leftover half and wrap it so it doesn't brown.

The TCM view

Avocado is sweet and neutral, strengthening the spleen and moistening the intestines. Tomato is sweet, sour and slightly cold, generating fluids, quenching thirst and aiding digestion. Wholemeal bread is sweet and neutral, nourishing the heart and spleen, and sesame moistens dryness. Balanced and light — right for a Balanced constitution in warm, damp weather.

Seasonal principle

Heat and humidity begin to rise together. Focus on clearing heat and supporting digestion with cooling, hydrating foods. Wear breathable clothing to prevent skin irritations caused by trapped moisture. Avoid overeating rich, greasy foods that can burden the Spleen and exacerbate internal dampness.
