Why it suits you: Sensitive types are prone to hay fever and itchy skin, which flare in the muggy damp-heat of Grain Buds. Millet and red dates support digestion, winter melon clears heat and damp, and the short, low-allergen ingredient list keeps it gentle.
Method
Prep 10 min · Cook 35 min- 1Rinse the millet. Deseed the winter melon, cut off the skin (keep it) and dice the flesh finely. Pit the red dates.
- 2Bring the water to the boil, add the millet, winter melon skin, red dates and ginger, and simmer gently for 20 minutes, stirring now and then so it doesn't stick.
- 3Lift out the skin and ginger, add the diced melon and simmer for 10–15 minutes until translucent and silky. Season with a pinch of salt.
- 4Spoon into a preheated thermal food flask so it is still warm in the afternoon.
Chef's tips
- Short on time? In the morning put the millet and diced melon in a thermal flask, preheat with boiling water, pour it off, then refill with boiling water and leave 3–4 hours.
- Prefer it plainer? Skip the salt, or simmer it with a little minced lean pork.
The TCM view
Millet is sweet, salty and cool and settles the spleen and stomach; winter melon is sweet, bland and cool, clears heat and drains water — its skin even more so; red dates are sweet and warm and ginger is pungent and warm, balancing the coolness. Mild and plain, it supports the spleen and defensive qi and drains the damp-heat behind itchy skin.
