Why it suits you: Qi-stagnant people often feel low and sigh a lot, and the hot, close weather of the Summer Solstice makes them more irritable. Tangy, faintly bitter grapefruit loosens the chest and regulates qi, and fragrant mint soothes the liver. Made the night before, it's ready straight from the fridge — no rushing at the hob, which helps the mood too.

Method

Prep 10 min · Cook 0 min
  1. 1Mix the oats, chia seeds, yoghurt and milk, divide between two glass jars, cover and refrigerate overnight.
  2. 2Peel the grapefruit and cut out the segments with a sharp knife, removing any pips; save the juice.
  3. 3In the morning, stir the grapefruit juice into the oats, top with the segments, drizzle with honey and add a few mint leaves.

Cautions

  • Grapefruit interacts with some blood pressure and cholesterol medicines; check with your doctor if you take them regularly, or use orange instead.

Chef's tips

  • If you don't like it too cold, take it out of the fridge half an hour before eating.

The TCM view

Grapefruit, like pomelo, is sweet, sour and cold, regulating qi, easing the chest and aiding digestion. Mint is pungent and cool, soothing the liver and relieving constraint. Oats are sweet and neutral, strengthening the spleen and boosting qi; yoghurt is sweet, sour and neutral, generating fluids; and honey harmonises the middle. Fragrant, liver-soothing ingredients with spleen-strengthening oats move qi without depleting it.

The peak of Yang energy. While it's hot outside, the internal digestive fire can be weak. Eat ginger to warm the stomach. Avoid sleeping directly under fans or air conditioning vents to prevent cold from entering the pores. Eat smaller, frequent meals to ease the burden on your digestion.
