Why it suits you: Qi Stagnation brings low moods, a tight chest and bloating, and the grey skies of the 'return of the south wind' do not help. Daikon moves qi and eases bloating, and fragrant spring onion frees yang; a crisp pancake lifts the mood at breakfast.

Method

Prep 10 min · Cook 12 min
  1. 1Salt the daikon for 5 minutes, then squeeze out the water.
  2. 2Mix the daikon, flour, egg, spring onion, pepper and water into a thick batter.
  3. 3Heat a little oil in a non-stick pan, spoon in the batter, flatten and fry over medium heat for 3 minutes a side until golden.

Chef's tips

  • Squeeze the daikon really dry, or the pancakes turn soggy.

The TCM view

Daikon is pungent, sweet and cool, sending qi downwards, easing the middle and aiding digestion. Spring onion is pungent and warm and frees yang; flour is sweet and neutral and supports the heart and spleen; egg nourishes blood. It moves qi without depleting it.

Seasonal principle

As dampness increases, protecting the Spleen is crucial. Eat warm, easily digestible foods to prevent dampness from accumulating. Avoid raw and cold foods which can weaken the digestive fire. Engage in moderate exercise to help the body naturally expel excess moisture through light sweating.
