Why it suits you: The Sensitive (allergic) type is prone to sniffles and itchy skin, often triggered by the damp and mould of the 'return of the south wind'. Toasted rice strengthens the spleen and black-eyed beans clear damp, with none of the common allergens.

Method

Prep 10 min · Cook 40 min
  1. 1The night before, soak the beans. Dry-toast the rice in a wok over low heat for about 8 minutes until lightly golden and fragrant.
  2. 2Put the toasted rice, beans, red dates, ginger and water in a rice cooker on the congee setting with a timer.
  3. 3Stir in the morning and season lightly.

Chef's tips

  • Toast a larger batch of rice; once cool it keeps in an airtight jar.

The TCM view

Toasted rice is sweet and warm, strengthening the spleen and warming the stomach. Black-eyed beans are sweet and neutral, supporting the spleen and kidneys and clearing damp; red dates nourish blood; ginger settles the stomach. A strong spleen keeps defensive qi firm.

Seasonal principle

As dampness increases, protecting the Spleen is crucial. Eat warm, easily digestible foods to prevent dampness from accumulating. Avoid raw and cold foods which can weaken the digestive fire. Engage in moderate exercise to help the body naturally expel excess moisture through light sweating.
